AAVSO (AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF VARIABLE STAR OBSERVERS)

The AAVSO was founded in 1911 at Harvard with the purpose of bringing together the amateur and professional astronomers and observers who aim to take scientific measures regarding variable stars. Today with members in more than 40 countries, over 9 million observations to date, it is the world’s largest association of variable star observers in existence.

Eyüboğlu has been an AAVSO member since 1998. In Astronomy courses and during the Astronomy Club activities students make observations and get in contact with AAVSO.

During an observation on the night of 31 January 2002, students in Eyüboğlu AAVSO Club witnessed the explosion of the variable star that they had been working on and became the first amateurs in Europe to identify this phenomenon.
