READING

  • Read for the main idea.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of character, plot ,setting,problem,resolution and theme)

  • Scan and skim a text to find the relevant information and summarize it at an appropriate level.

  • Read independently for pleasure, instruction and information

  • Use prediction skills, contextual clues to deduce the meaning of unknown vocabulary.

  • Have some dictionary skills. eg. Finding words in alphabetical order,understanding the different forms of words and their abbreviations.Finding the correct form and meaning of words.

  • Show an interest in a variety of fiction and non-fiction literature

  • Show awareness that poems have complex meaning and that they need to be read and reread and questioned and reflected on to yield their meaning

  • Recognise that there are more complex story structures than beginning, middle and end

  • Locate and select resources appropriate to their reading level and for a specific purpose

  • Independently select the appropriate reading strategy for the purpose of the reading activity (scanning, skimming, rereading)

WRITING:

  • Organize a piece of writing according to a timeline using 150-200 words and following certain rules. (margin,title,date,paragraph,indentation)
  • Write in a consistent, legible style
  • Link ideas within and between paragraphs.(using linking words)
  • Write with a command of grammatical structures using newly-learnt vocabulary that does not impede comprehension.
  • Use punctuation correctly.
  • Spell words accurately.
  • Develop and rewrite a draft.
  • Prepare a portfolio of work.(once a term ,including five pieces.) At the end of the year each student should have samples of :a. a poem (4 verses)
    •  a narrative (150-200 words)
    •  informal and formal letters ( a letter to an editor of a newspaper)
    •  a simple report (15-20 sentences)
    •  a description
    •  a questionnaire

LISTENING:

  • Understand classroom commands.
  • Follow and understand instructions in English.
  • Listen for and explain the main idea at an appropriate level.
  • Listen to summarize a narrative text at an appropriate level.(8 minutes/taking notes)
  • Listen appropriately for a sustained period of time and for a variety of purposes (to seek information, to gain knowledge, for instructions, for enjoyment)
  • Understand an English Language Children's TV programme

SPEAKING:

  • Talk about personal and school life.
  • Talk about hobbies, interests , families, pets, and shopping and the topics mentioned in the yearly plan.
  • Make offers, suggestions, and be able to accept and refuse them.
  • Speak with comprehensible pronunciation that does not impede communication.
  • Speak with a command of grammatical structures that does not impede comprehension.
  • Describe a picture and a character.
  • Narrate events.
  • Use English for conversation outside the classroom.
  • Incorporate into speech newly-acquired vocabulary and grammar structures.
  • Appropriately prepare and deliver an individual presentation to inform other students.
